Church of San Cristoforo in Borgotaro

The Church of San Cristoforo, located in the countryside of Borgo Val di Taro, is one of the most interesting historic religious buildings in the Upper Taro Valley.

Its origins date back to the 10th century, although the church was modified several times over the centuries. It stood along an ancient route that connected the area of Bardi with Lunigiana through the Bratello Pass, following an alternative route to the historic Via Francigena.

The present building preserves traces of its long history. Inside, archaeological excavations have revealed the foundations of the original semicircular medieval apse and remains connected with the ancient Romanesque bell tower. These elements can still be seen beneath glass sections in the floor.

The church combines Romanesque origins with later architectural additions, including the presbytery, side chapel and the bell tower built in the 19th century.

Surrounded by the peaceful landscape of the Parma Apennines, San Cristoforo is an interesting destination for visitors exploring the history, ancient churches and lesser-known treasures of Borgotaro and the Taro Valley.
