Podere Pradarolo: Natural Wines from the Val Ceno

Podere Pradarolo is an agricultural and wine estate located in Serravalle, Varano de’ Melegari, in the lower Val Ceno, surrounded by the hills and countryside of the province of Parma.

The estate combines wine production, respect for the land and the recovery of traditional winemaking techniques, creating wines with a distinctive identity closely connected to their place of origin.

The Story of Podere Pradarolo

The Carretti family acquired the estate in 1972. From 1989 onwards, Podere Pradarolo gradually returned to wine production, recovering a viticultural tradition that had once been widespread in this part of the Val Ceno.

Alberto Carretti played a central role in developing the project, choosing an approach based on organic grape growing and traditional cellar practices.

Today, the estate represents an interesting example of how an ancient agricultural vocation can be rediscovered through a contemporary philosophy focused on authenticity and respect for nature.

Vineyards in the Val Ceno

Podere Pradarolo covers approximately 60 hectares, around 9 hectares of which are vineyards.

The vineyards, winery and historic residence stand on the left bank of the Ceno River in an area forming a natural south-facing amphitheatre.

The local environment is influenced by relatively cool temperatures, temperature variations between day and night and regular air circulation. These characteristics contribute to the distinctive conditions in which the estate's grapes are grown.

Organic Grapes and Traditional Winemaking

Podere Pradarolo follows an approach based on organic viticulture. In the vineyards, the estate describes the use of copper and sulphur as part of its cultivation practices.

In the cellar, one of its defining characteristics is the use of long and very long macerations, not only for red wines but also for white varieties.

Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and limited intervention are part of a philosophy aimed at producing wines capable of expressing the character of the grapes and their territory.

This approach has given Podere Pradarolo a distinctive position among producers interested in traditional and natural winemaking.

A Historic Estate

The property itself also has an interesting history.

The main residence was once the Podesteria of Serravalle and dates back several centuries. Important restoration work carried out during the 18th century introduced architectural elements including a vaulted staircase and a private chapel dedicated to San Bernardino da Siena, which remains consecrated.

Today, the buildings are gradually being restored while preserving their historic character.

The winery occupies spaces once used as cattle stables, while a newer underground cellar was added in 2016.

Wine, Hospitality and Local Experiences

Podere Pradarolo is not only a wine-producing estate. Hospitality has become another part of its identity.

Guests can experience the peaceful rural atmosphere of the property and discover the rhythms of the vineyard, cellar and surrounding countryside.

Historic spaces within the estate can also host private occasions and food-and-wine events, creating a close connection between wine, hospitality and the Val Ceno landscape.

Podere Pradarolo and Varano de’ Melegari

Podere Pradarolo reveals a different side of Varano de’ Melegari.

While the town is internationally associated with motorsport through Dallara and the Riccardo Paletti Racetrack, the surrounding countryside preserves a strong agricultural tradition.

A visit to the estate therefore offers an opportunity to discover the wine culture of the Val Ceno, combining local products, rural landscapes and the history of this lesser-known part of the Parma Apennines.
