Dallara: Motorsport Engineering from Varano de’ Melegari to the World
Dallara is one of the most internationally recognised companies based in Varano de’ Melegari, in the province of Parma. Founded by engineer Giampaolo Dallara in 1972, the company has grown from a small local operation into a global name in motorsport, high-performance automotive engineering and advanced technology.
Its headquarters remain in Varano de’ Melegari, strengthening the close relationship between the company and the Val Ceno. Today, Dallara operates across racing, automotive, aerospace and special projects, bringing together engineering, research, advanced materials and manufacturing.
The Story of Dallara
The Dallara story began in 1972 in Giampaolo Dallara's family home in Varano de’ Melegari. The company's first car was the SP 1000, a three-seater vehicle with a steel monocoque and central driving position.
A major milestone arrived in 1978 with the Dallara 378, the company's first Formula 3 car. During the following decades, Dallara progressively expanded its expertise in racing-car design, aerodynamics and composite materials.
In 1984, the company built Italy's first wind tunnel with a moving belt, while in 1985 it introduced its first carbon-fibre monocoque with the F385. In 1991, a new Dallara facility was inaugurated in Varano de’ Melegari.
Racing and Motorsport
Motorsport remains at the heart of Dallara's identity.
Over more than fifty years, the company has developed racing cars and technologies for numerous international competitions. One of the most important chapters of its history is its relationship with IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500.
Dallara recorded its first Indianapolis 500 victory in 1998, and since 2012 Dallara chassis have been used by all cars competing in the series.
The company's racing activities are supported by extensive expertise in aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, lightweight materials, simulation, prototyping and testing.
Aerodynamics and Advanced Engineering
One of Dallara's major areas of expertise is aerodynamics.
Its engineers combine wind-tunnel testing with advanced numerical simulation and CFD technology to study and optimise vehicle performance.
Specialised teams work on aerodynamic development, virtual simulation, experimental testing, modelling and rapid prototyping. These capabilities allow Dallara to develop solutions for racing cars as well as high-performance road vehicles and other advanced engineering projects.
Carbon Fibre and Lightweight Materials
Lightweight construction is another fundamental part of Dallara's technological expertise.
The company has decades of experience in the design and production of structures using carbon fibre and advanced composite materials. This knowledge is particularly valuable in motorsport, where reducing weight while maintaining strength and safety can significantly influence performance.
The wider Dallara Group also includes Dallara Compositi, based in Stradella di Collecchio, which designs and manufactures equipment, models and moulds for composite components used in motorsport, aerospace, automotive and other sectors.
Dallara Stradale and EXP
In 2017, Dallara brought together its experience in aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics and composite materials to create the Dallara Stradale, the road-legal sports car conceived from Giampaolo Dallara's long-held ambition to produce a car bearing his own name.
The production facility in Varano de’ Melegari is dedicated to the assembly of the Dallara Stradale, Dallara EXP and ZBike, supported by a service department responsible for vehicle assistance and maintenance.
Automotive and Special Projects
Dallara's expertise extends beyond its own vehicles.
The company works in automotive engineering, developing technologies and components for high-performance cars. Its competencies include vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, lightweight structures, digital and electronic solutions, prototyping and testing.
This technological know-how has allowed Dallara to collaborate on major automotive projects and transfer knowledge developed through racing into other areas of vehicle engineering.
From Motorsport to Aerospace
Dallara has also expanded its activities into the aerospace sector.
In 2020, the company established a dedicated aerospace business unit, applying knowledge developed over decades of motorsport engineering to projects outside the traditional automotive world.
This evolution demonstrates how technologies originally developed for racing can find applications in sectors where lightweight materials, structural efficiency, simulation and advanced engineering are equally important.
Dallara and Varano de’ Melegari
Despite its international growth, Dallara has maintained a particularly strong connection with Varano de’ Melegari.
Its headquarters and important production activities remain here, making the company an essential part of the town's economic and technological identity.
The relationship with the territory is also visible through the Dallara Academy, opened in 2018 as a place dedicated to the company's history, education and interaction with the community.
Together with the nearby Riccardo Paletti Racetrack, Dallara has helped make Varano de’ Melegari one of the most distinctive motorsport locations in the province of Parma and an important part of Emilia-Romagna's Motor Valley.
Dallara Today
Today the Dallara Group operates through several specialised companies and business units in Italy and the United States.
Its principal fields include racing, automotive, aerospace and special projects, supported by expertise in aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, lightweight materials, digital solutions, prototyping and testing.
What began in a family home in Varano de’ Melegari has therefore developed into an international engineering group while maintaining strong roots in the territory where its story began.
