The Girolamo Magnani Theater is one of Fidenza’s most important historic and cultural landmarks. Located in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, this elegant theatre is a fine example of 19th-century Italian theatrical architecture.
Construction began in 1813 following a design by architect Nicola Bettoli, who also worked on the Teatro Regio in Parma. After several interruptions, the building was finally completed and officially inaugurated on 26 October 1861 with Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore.
The theatre owes much of its beauty to Girolamo Magnani, the renowned Fidenza-born painter, decorator and stage designer after whom it was later named. Magnani created the decorations of the auditorium, foyer and Ridotto, filling the interiors with frescoes, stucco work, gilded details, flowers, allegorical figures and cherubs.
The main auditorium features a traditional horseshoe-shaped layout with three tiers of boxes, creating the intimate and elegant atmosphere typical of historic Italian theatres.
Particularly fascinating is the Ridotto, richly decorated and furnished with large gilded mirrors and crystal chandeliers originally from the ducal court of Parma.
Today, Teatro Magnani remains an active cultural venue, hosting theatre performances, opera, concerts, music, events and shows for younger audiences. After major restoration and improvement works carried out in 2025, the historic theatre was officially reopened in January 2026.
