The Luigi Musini Museum of the Risorgimento in Fidenza is dedicated to the events and personalities that shaped Italian history from the Napoleonic period to the Second World War and the Resistance.
The museum is named after Luigi Musini (1843–1903), a doctor, Garibaldian volunteer and political figure from the Fidenza area. Its collection is largely based on historical material donated to the town by his son, Nullo Musini, together with contributions from local citizens and the Municipal Archives.
The exhibition is arranged in nine rooms, following a chronological and thematic journey through the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Visitors can explore the age of Napoleon and Marie Louise, the Bourbon period, the Italian Risorgimento, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Giuseppe Verdi, the First World War, the years leading to the Second World War and the Italian Resistance.
The collection includes historic documents, posters, photographs, prints, flags, uniforms and military memorabilia. One of its most remarkable exhibits is a rare photographic album dedicated to Garibaldi's Thousand, the volunteers who took part in the famous 1860 expedition.
Since 1989, the museum has been housed inside the historic Palazzo delle Orsoline, which is also home to other cultural institutions in Fidenza.
The museum offers an interesting opportunity to discover not only the history of the Italian Risorgimento, but also the role played by Fidenza and its citizens during some of the most important events in modern Italian history.
