Located in the historic centre of Tizzano Val Parma, Tizzano Castle (Castello di Tizzano) is an ancient medieval fortress overlooking the beautiful landscapes of the Parma Apennines.
Built on a strategic hilltop between the Parma and Parmossa valleys, the castle once controlled important communication and trade routes, including the historic Salt Road.
The castle probably dates back to the 10th or 11th century and played an important defensive role throughout the Middle Ages.
Over the centuries, it belonged to several powerful noble families, including the Terzi, Pallavicino, Farnese and Doria.
In 1551, during the War of Parma, the fortress suffered severe damage from artillery attacks. Its decline continued over the following centuries, particularly after a devastating earthquake in 1834.
Today, visitors can admire the surviving stone walls, the remains of a rectangular tower and an ancient vaulted room.
Restoration and archaeological excavations have helped recover part of the original structure, transforming the ruins into an atmospheric cultural space.
During the summer, the castle occasionally hosts concerts, theatrical performances and cultural events, combining medieval history with contemporary entertainment.
Thanks to its panoramic position, Tizzano Castle is also an attractive destination for photography enthusiasts and visitors exploring the historic villages of the Parma Apennines.
