What to See and Do in Fidenza

Fidenza is a fascinating town where history, art and local traditions can be discovered on foot. Once known as Borgo San Donnino, it stands along the ancient Via Emilia and is an important historic stop on the Via Francigena, the pilgrimage route that has connected northern Europe with Rome for centuries.

The perfect place to start is the Cathedral of San Donnino, the symbol of Fidenza and one of the most remarkable Romanesque monuments in the Parma area. Its impressive façade, closely associated with Benedetto Antelami and his workshop, is decorated with sculptures and reliefs illustrating religious stories, medieval life and the tradition of pilgrimage.

Next to the Cathedral, visitors can explore the Fidenza Cathedral Museum, which preserves important works of religious art and the Treasury of San Donnino. Nearby, Porta San Donnino and the remains of the ancient Roman bridge recall the long history of the city.

Walking through the historic centre leads to Piazza Garibaldi, one of Fidenza's main meeting places and home to the Town Hall. Not far away stands the elegant Girolamo Magnani Theater, inaugurated in 1861 with Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore.

Another important cultural destination is Palazzo delle Orsoline, a historic complex that today houses several cultural institutions. Here visitors can discover the Luigi Musini Museum of the Risorgimento, the Stirone Fossil Museum, the Oreste Emanuelli Art Gallery and the Michele Leoni Civic Library.

Fidenza also has a strong connection with the Via Francigena. From the town, travellers can follow historic routes towards the surrounding countryside and hills, discovering rural landscapes, small villages and places that once welcomed pilgrims on their journey to Rome.

For shopping enthusiasts, Fidenza Village is located just outside the town centre and offers a wide selection of Italian and international fashion boutiques.

Fidenza is also an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding area, including the Stirone and Piacenziano Regional Park, Salsomaggiore Terme, Tabiano, the Verdi Lands and the hills of the Parma province.
