The Museum of the Votive Tank in Noceto preserves one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in Europe. Its centrepiece is an extraordinary wooden structure built approximately 3,500 years ago by the Terramare civilization, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the beliefs, craftsmanship and daily life of a prehistoric community.
An Extraordinary Archaeological Discovery
The Votive Tank was discovered in March 2005 during construction work on the southern outskirts of Noceto. Archaeological excavations revealed a monumental wooden basin containing a large collection of objects dating from the Bronze Age.
The structure was built using oak planks, vertical posts and horizontal beams. Measuring approximately 12 metres in length, almost 7 metres in width and at least 3 metres in depth, it represents an exceptional example of prehistoric engineering.
Because the original structure could not be preserved at the excavation site, it was carefully dismantled, conserved and reconstructed inside the museum.
The Mystery of the Votive Tank
The basin was filled with water and, over time, numerous objects were deliberately placed inside it. Archaeologists believe that these deposits were connected with ritual practices rather than ordinary domestic activities.
The finds include pottery, wooden tools, baskets, animal remains, branches and fruits. Among the most significant discoveries are five rare wooden ploughs, which provide valuable evidence of agricultural technology during the Bronze Age.
The tank offers a fascinating insight into the relationship between prehistoric communities, water, agriculture and spiritual beliefs.
